Chapter 16

The Canqua Nobek Training Camp lay at the southern edge of the Eastern Seaboard Territory. Flencik had spent the day there, getting in the mandated hours of yearly field work to maintain his physician’s certification.

It was nice to get out of the hospital near his and Rajhir’s home by the sea. Canqua was an older training camp, but the buildings and training grounds had recently undergone renovations. The 1600-acre campus was located on rolling hills five miles from the ocean. Patches of forest dotted here and there and there was a large lake for swimming exercises. It was a pleasant setting when one discounted the yelling Nobek younglings who fought simply for the pleasure of doing so and the sound of weapons fire on the shooting range. The occasional boom of explosives training for advanced students also interrupted the serene atmosphere. Flencik had already noted in years past that no avians or animals of any type ventured onto the grounds. Even if the noise hadn’t frightened them off, the Nobeks would have enjoyed hunting anything down.

The cooling breezes of fall were delivering much-needed relief from the past summer’s swelter, though the nights were becoming markedly colder. With no medical emergencies at the training camp, the head of its hospital facility had taken Flencik on a pleasant tour of the newly refurbished grounds.

During their walk, Flencik got to see Nobek younglings of all ages involved in physical exercises, fighting techniques, meditation practice, and even scholastic instruction. The day had been too nice for the boys to remain indoors, so all classes had been moved outside. Under the watchful eyes of trainers and instructors, Flencik had enjoyed seeing firsthand how members of the sometimes violent breed were taught to rein in thoughtless reaction.

The youngest Nobek boys were the most feral of the bunch. They had no concept of long-term consequences and no real grasp of danger to themselves. From ages five to seven, tempers flared with an abruptness that sometimes led to an entire class beating the hell out of each other. Their minders had their hands full with the boys, requiring one adult for every three trainees. As young as they were, the Nobek children were capable of an incredible amount of destruction.

Flencik had learned that there was a less violent period in the young Nobeks’ lives. Once they’d learned meditation practices and that their instructors would not tolerate disrespect and uncontrolled behavior, they settled down. Punishment was handed down swiftly to the younglings who got out of line. Fighting was not discouraged entirely, because with Nobeks it was inevitable. So long as all the combatants felt there was good reason for it and a trainer was on hand to make sure it didn’t turn deadly, hand-to-hand combat was allowed to settle disputes.

Nobeks turned vicious once more when puberty struck. The rampant hormones of adolescence tended to drive all Kalquorian males to distraction. With the Nobek breed’s more ferocious leanings, it meant nothing but trouble. A teenage Nobek who needed to fuck had little control over his temper when another’s warm body could not be had.
